GARMENT CARE
KAFTAN
Kaftan or Caftan is a single piece dress which can be worn as a shirt or kurti or a nightdress. The only difference is its length. Kaftan requires the entire width of cloth and larger the width, longer will be the length of the sleeves. Stitching is done only at the neck, sides and near the ankles. Caftans are usually stitched with cotton, satin, nylon or silk fabrics and usually have embroidery or a print design near the neck.
CARE KAFTAN
GENTLE HAND WASH – Spot Clean, Light Soils and Stains : * Whether it is a spot clean or removing a light stain, use cool water and a small amount of mild detergent to handwash the kaftan. Very gently swirl the kaftan in the soapy water for up to 5 minutes to remove light soiling when handwashing as silk and other delicate fabrics can be easily torn or damaged.
- DO NOT bleach or soak your kaftan
- When your kaftan is clean, rinse in clean cold/cool water
- DO NOT squeeze the excess the water from the garment
- DO drip dry the garment by hanging; or,
- For ultimate care, kaftans should be laid flat to dry on a towel without delay (and out of direct sunlight) to avoid stretching the delicate fabric — more on this below in Point 4.
*DO NOT machine wash and DO NOT tumble dry your kaftan – EVER!. - CAN I IRON MY KAFTAN? : Here’s what to do. If you properly lay flat your kaftan when drying on a towel, this will minimise the creases, and therefore minimal use of the iron is required. However, there will be the odd kaftan crease that needs to be ironed out! It’s just the way it goes.
When ironing your kaftan, it is critical to use a low to medium heat setting.
NEVER let the iron come in direct contact with the crystal stones, embellishments or beading.
Use a piece of thick white cotton fabric between the iron.
Make sure you move the iron and fabric along as you iron to avoid fabric burn.Even better, using a steamer will release creases, my preferred method. It also tends to be softer on the silk and on most delicate fabrics. Winning!
AVOID DIRECT SUNLIGHT : Prolonged artificial and ultraviolet light (sunlight) are the greatest dangers to your silk, embellished and hand-beaded kaftan pieces. The sun’s rays can damage fabrics and can rot threads – so be very careful.
Direct and indirect light will cause fabric deterioration and breakdown, including fraying, fading, discolouration and yellow spotting when exposed to light for extended periods. If the sun rays are prominent in your wardrobe or storage space, or there’s too much light, then use block out blinds to fend the rays or find a more suitable area to store and protect your kaftans to prevent fabric fade and deterioration.
STORING YOUR KAFTANS : Finally, caring for your kaftan isn’t only about washing or drying them. One of the most important things you can do to prolong your kaftans’ longevity is to ensure your pieces are safely stored in breathable, premium 100% Cotton Garment Bags.
Whether you have one or two kaftans or a whole collection, cotton garment bags safeguard your loves from direct sunlight, dust, dirt, insects, mould, mildew and moisture throughout the seasons so you can enjoy wearing them for years to come
JACKETS
The jacket came to the Museum, along with 10 other pieces, from the collection of Enakshi Bhavnani, author of Decorative Designs and Craftsmanship of India. Kashmir, long associated with the high-quality fabric woven from the wool of cashmere goats, also has its own recognized tradition of embroidery, characterized by delicate designs with motifs following nature—a tradition well represented in this jacket’s exuberant interweaving of flowers. There are different types of jackets like Jacket needle work pashmina, Jacket pashmina ari, Jacket designer woollen, Jacket velvet and many more.
CARE OF JACKETS
To begin with, you have to make sure that you do not keep your jackets out in the open. The wardrobe where it is kept should be nice and well stacked along with all kinds of bug repellents in place. It is very important that your wardrobe be well maintained and your jacket too will then literally be in a safe surrounding. Be very particular about leather jackets.
- When it comes to proper high end jackets, make sure that they are hung in the right way from hangers and also they should be propped inside the covers that they come in. This will help in keeping the jacket protected from materials that might harm the jacket or hamper its longevity.
- The other thing that you should keep in mind is that if you have a fine material jacket which has a tendency to gather dust, then it should be brushed from time to time. There are special brushes that are available for brushing coats and jackets which you should use when it comes to maintaining jackets properly. This is a prerequisite of taking care of jackets.
- The other thing that you have to keep in mind is the wash care instruction. Washing a jacket too much might harm it and its quality. So, always follow the wash care instructions down to the last detail so that they are well-maintained in the long run.
- After you wear a jacket suppose during the entire winter season, before you pack it away into the wardrobe, make sure that you clean it once properly and lay it out in the sun for some time and then pack it in. Repeat the same process when you take out the jacket once before wearing it.

- Drying. Hand wash-only sweaters should be dried flat. Machine-washable sweaters can sometimes be dried in the dryer on low heat. Check the care label to be sure.
- Blocking. Soft, hand wash-only sweaters may lose their shape during washing. To restore them, trace the outline of the sweater onto a piece of brown or craft paper before cleaning. Use it as a pattern to block the sweater to its original size and shape.

CARE OF WAIST COAT
- Wash your clothes less : Waist coats are made in a way so you don’t have to wash them after every wear. On the other hand, items such as workout clothing should be washed after every wear as they are in closer contact with your skin.
- Wash your clothes at lower temperatures & wash like colours together : When washing your clothes at lower temperatures, and with a gentle and natural laundry detergent, you can prevent colour fading of the clothing garment. You can also reduce 80% of the emissions which are produced during the “in-use” stage of a clothing garment’s lifecycle.
- Wash your clothes inside out :
This avoids friction, snagging, pilling and fading of the garments to make them last longer. You can also put your delicate items in a mesh laundry bag. - Air dry your clothes: A tumble dryer uses a lot of energy to run, and it can also cause damage to the fibres of your clothing. Hang your clothing either inside, or outside on the washing line. A good tip is to shake out your clothes as soon as they come out of the washing machine to remove some of the wrinkles.
5.Protect your clothes : When cooking, wear an apron over your clothes to protect your clothing pieces. When it happens that you do get a stain, try to remove it as soon as possible (with vinegar and baking soda). The longer you leave a stain, the harder it is to remove.

- Cold Hand Wash Only – Never put your poncho in a washing machine; just hand wash it in cold water. Our gentle but effective eco-friendly Laundry Liquid is excellent for this job.
- Hang to Dry – Always dry your poncho by hanging it a well-ventilated place. The great outdoors is best, but if you don’t have the space (or it’s raining!) find somewhere inside where air is flowing.
- Do Not Bleach – Of course, you should never let bleach anywhere near your precious poncho.
- Do Not Dry Clean – Don’t take your poncho to the dry cleaners; the chemicals there just won’t agree with it.

CARE OF TUNIC
- Prefer Hand-washing Instead Of Quick Machine-wash
For cotton, prefer gentle washing, mostly with hands.
Wash them in warm or cold water to prevent fading and shrinking. Avoid washing in hot water, as it may shrink the cotton. Use a mild detergent or cottage soap to wash the clothes clean. As a rule of thumb, refer the garment label for care instructions. - Never Dry In Direct Sunlight : Do not dry cotton Tunics in the sunlight directly. The harsh UV rays from sunlight can fade away the color and even shrink the fabric. However, you can put your white clothes under direct sunlight, ensure to take them back as soon as they are dry. Dry your cotton Tunics in the shade or lightly heat them with a dryer.
- No Need For Drycleaning : As opposed to silk, cotton Tunics doesn’t need dry cleaning. Chemicals used in dry cleaning can result in color leaching and loss of shine. However, you can send them for dry cleaning once in a blue moon or case of urgency.
- Say No To Fabric Softeners : Softeners can add a fresh scent to any fabric and keep them as good as new. In the case of cotton Tunics, softeners don’t play a huge role. If misused, they might stain your cotton. Instead of softeners, try using organic soaps. They naturally keep the fabric soft and add years to your Tunics’ life.

It is a labor of love that spans months, culminating in nightwear that transcends mere garments to become cherished heirlooms, treasured for generations to come
CARE OF NIGHT GOWNS/Dresses
To keep your Nightgowns/Dresses clothing for longer:
- Check and follow care instructions on the label.
- Machine wash at up to 30°C.
- Wash inside out with similar colours.
- Do not use bleach.
- Avoid leaving to soak, do not twist.
- Do not dry clean.
- Do not tumble dry.
- Iron on a low setting inside out.
- If items are made of delicate fabrics such as silk and the label says “delicate”, we recommend washing them by hand with wool and silk shampoo.
DRESSES
Co-ord derives from its name coordinates, and its sartorial aspect means a matching set top and bottom. In short, coordinate sets are matching outfits that consist of a top and bottom, which are designed to be worn together to create a cohesive and coordinated appearance. In the 1920s, Coco Chanel made a comfy jersey cardigan and skirt set. In the 1950s and 60s, there was a burst of colorful co-ord sets with bold prints. A co-ord set is a set of multiple pieces of clothing . Top and bottom wear designed and paired in such a manner that they are made from the same or similar material and fabric to give a uniform look.
CARE OF DRESSES
- Think twice about washing : Wash clothing only when necessary (many items can be worn multiple times before they need to be washed). Each washing shortens the life of a garment. Clothes will suffer less wear and tear from over washing.
- Use earth-friendly detergents. Use laundry detergent without harmful, petrochemicals (petroleum-derived). Switch to minimal packaging laundry products and cleaning solutions.
Earth-friendly benefit: You’ll play a part in reducing toxins in the water and reducing your carbon footprint. - Avoid ironing :
Hanging clothes in the bathroom when you take a hot shower will help reshape them. - Drip dry :
Hang clothes to dry outdoors on a clothing line or a drying rack (or on a drying rack in the bathtub).
Earth-friendly benefit: You will save energy and money while your clothes suffer less wear and tear from the dryer. - Hang clothes properly :
Hang on wooden hangers to avoid misshapen shoulders. Fold arms cross-wise over the shoulders. For woolens, avoid hanging and fold instead to avoid sagging.
