The Art and Crafts of Kashmir

Kashmir being the “jannat” of India, the handicrafts belonging to this place are the integral part of rich Indian heritage as they evolved through so many generations. Apart from serving the utilitarian purpose these handicrafts depict the aesthetic sense of Kashmir which is a mode of self- expression .The magnificent beauty of these products has been woven by the depth & the artistic hands of the talented folk of this “jannat” (paradise). This art is being able to make its place from the royal to the modest homes all over the world. No two items of handicrafts are identical, for each is a unique creation. These products are a symbol of standardization. The articles speak of the people and the beautiful surroundings in day to day life. These articles despite being so common still are able to break the monotony which prevails in this technological world. Something as common as a water pot is able to bring you the freshness. Handicrafts stand symbolizes of our creativity and uniqueness as compared to the dull repetition of mass production. Walnut Wood: 

Kashmir is the only region in India bestowed with the presence of the majestic walnut trees. A fully grown walnut tree reaches a height of about 50 feet. The walnuts from Kashmir are rich and famous worldwide for their taste. Another dimension of a walnut tree is the beautiful carving it hosts. Wood carving reached Kashmir from central Asia some 600-700 years ago, through a saint shah hamadanra. The art reached its pinnacle in the era of zain-ul-abidin, famously known as “budshah” [1420- 1470].

Paper mache :

Copperware:

One of the most famous ancient arts of Kashmir is copper ware items. The copper smiths of Kashmir have maintained the traditional work and the quality of these products. The traditional copper ware of Kashmir is created by three processes of shaping decoration ( Naqashi ) and tinning ( kalal ) they use hammers and chisel to engrave copperware items of household utility like Bowls, Frames, Samovars, Flower Vases, Tea Sets, Ornamental Picture Frames, Lemon Set etc. Floral styled geometrical leaf and calligraphic motifs are engraved or embossed on copper to cover the entire surface with intricate designs which are then oxidized so as to stand out better from the background. The work on copperware items is known as “Naqashi” and determines the price of the object as does the weight.

Copper ware is preferred because it is durable and it has excellent characteristics. The ageless use of copper bears testimony to its myriad virtues and everlasting appeal.

Finishing: 

Unless otherwise specified albasir walnut wood /paper mache/ copperware products are usually finished in a durable clear matt lacquer. This provides an easy to care for durable finish that doesn’t compromise the natural beauty of the product.

Care: 

Pure materials which are used in the making of albasir walnut wood /paper mache/ copperware product, may expand and shrink with differences in temperature and humidity. Take care do not place your products next to radiators or anywhere subject to any excessive changes in temperature or moisture content. We recommend that all products should be placed on mats and any spillages should be wiped up immediately with a dry cleaned cotton fabric.

Cleaning: 

To clean the product wipe with a damp cloth and buff with a dry cloth. In the event of more stubborn mark a solution of mild detergent should be used on the cloth. Silicone based polishes should not be used on the products as they will build up and leave a sticky residue on the surface.
