A brief history of the evolution of the albasir industry

Kashmir is a name that has been synonymous for the last seven centuries with art and craft. Decades ago, our fore fathers took up this profession as artisans in this royal field. It is said that during those times people would travel from Kashmir to other parts of India & other countries in the winter months to sell their creations and make a living. These products once could only be afforded by the royal class of the society as they were very expensive because it was all handmade. Slowly but steadily our fore fathers established the first trade outlet at the Bohri-Kadal in Kashmir in the 1920s. Albasir industries collection is an extension of the ancestral business and has been able to evolve as a worldwide organization.

Shawls:

A shawl is a wrap around which is mostly used to keep the body warm but with the changing times they have become a status symbol. The shawls of Kashmir are renowned all over, are either made of needle work or ari work. The shawls having all over embroider work are called jamawar shawls, it is such an intricate work that it takes more than 1 year for one man to embroider one piece. Pashmina sozni shawls are popular because of the embroidery done upon them which is a specialty of kashmir. Both embroidery and the type of wool used make the difference in price. Pashmina Jamawar, Border, Antique jamawar, Jaal, Kani, Pazily, Woolen Shawls, Silk-pashmina Shawls Beads, Ari work all kinds of needle & ari work embroidered shawls for men & women both.

Carpets:

Kashmiri carpets are world renowned for two things they are handmade and they are always knotted never tufted. The weft threads are passed through, the ‘Talim’ or design and color specifications are then worked out on this a strand of yarn is looped through the warp & weft, knotted and then cut. The yarn used normally is silk, wool or silk and wool. To complete a Kashmiri carpet, it may take three months or as long as two years. Woolen carpets always have a cotton base (warp & weft). Suits & Sarees:

Furnishings:

Because of the high quality of embroidery done on curtains, bed spreads, cushion covers, Kashmiri crewel work is in great demand all over the world. Chain stitch is it in wool silk or cotton is done by hook rather than any needle. The hook is referred to as ari & hook work covers a much larger area than needle work in the same amount of time. All the embroidery is executed on white cotton fabric, pre-shrunk by the manufacturers. The worth of each piece lies in the size of the stitches and the yarn used tiny stitches are used to cover the entire area-the (figures or motifs) in striking colors. The background is in a single color, made up of a series of coin sized concentric circles which impart dynamism and a sense of movement to a design. The vast cultural and ethnic diversity of Kashmir has enabled a variety of motifs, techniques and crafts to flourish on this land. These handicrafts items are handmade requiring a lot of deftness and time. The various handicrafts are in tune with its age old splendid civilization, which has been mastered over centuries. The past 20 years has been turbulent for Kashmir and its people and a resultant fall in patronage from tourists and visitors has forced Kashmir craftsmen to find alternate means of livelihood. The highly desired artistry of Kashmir craftsmen is at a decisive point in history. Century old traditional skills, dating back to 15th and 16th century that have been preserved through generations may be lost if the local indigenous art in Kashmir does not find patronage.

We at albasir industries are passionate about reviving Kashmir indigenous art not just for our generation but importantly for future generations to come. By simply buying direct from Kashmir artisan’s handcrafted items that are expensive for the local population to support we will be providing patronage to traditional skills that are at the brink. Importantly this would provide an opportunity for income that currently is limited or does not exist for the artisans.
